How to pressure wash your deck

Writer: Heath McKissickHeath McKissick

Pressure washing your deck is an essential part of deck maintenance that helps to keep it looking clean and well-maintained. Pressure washing is a relatively easy process, but it requires the proper tools and techniques to avoid damaging your deck. In this essay, I will explain how to pressure wash your deck in a way that is both effective and safe.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

To pressure wash your deck, you will need a pressure washer, a cleaning solution, safety goggles, a deck brush, a garden hose, and protective clothing. A pressure washer is the most important tool you will need. You can rent a pressure washer from a home improvement store or buy one if you plan to pressure wash your deck regularly. Make sure to choose a pressure washer with a PSI (pounds per square inch) of at least 2000.

Step 2: Prepare the Deck

Before you begin pressure washing your deck, remove any outdoor furniture, grills, and other objects from the deck. Cover any nearby plants or bushes with plastic sheeting to protect them from the cleaning solution and pressure washer spray. Sweep the deck with a broom to remove any loose dirt or debris.

Step 3: Apply Cleaning Solution

Before you begin pressure washing, apply a deck cleaning solution to the deck. You can find deck cleaning solutions at any home improvement store. Apply the cleaning solution with a garden sprayer or a brush, following the instructions on the label. Let the cleaning solution sit on the deck for about 10 minutes to allow it to penetrate the dirt and grime.

Step 4: Pressure Wash the Deck

Once the cleaning solution has been applied and allowed to sit, it’s time to start pressure washing. Put on your safety goggles and protective clothing. Attach the pressure washer wand to the pressure washer and turn it on. Hold the wand about two feet away from the deck and move it in a sweeping motion across the surface of the deck, working in small sections. Keep the nozzle moving to avoid creating any gouges or streaks in the wood. If you encounter any stubborn stains or areas of heavy grime, you can move the wand closer to the deck to increase the pressure.

Step 5: Rinse the Deck

After you’ve pressure washed the entire deck, it’s time to rinse it off. Use a garden hose to rinse the deck thoroughly, starting at one end and working your way to the other. Make sure to rinse away any remaining cleaning solution and debris.

Step 6: Let the Deck Dry

After you’ve rinsed the deck, let it dry completely before you replace any outdoor furniture or use it. Depending on the weather, this may take several hours or even a full day.

In conclusion, pressure washing your deck is a simple and effective way to keep it looking clean and well-maintained. By following these steps, you can ensure that your deck stays in top condition for years to come. Remember to always use the proper tools and techniques to avoid damaging your deck, and make sure to wear protective clothing and goggles to keep yourself safe.
